B.E.S.T. Family Holiday Party and Senior Celebration

December 2, 2017

Saturday, December 2nd was an afternoon of holiday cheer at Friends School of Baltimore as B.E.S.T. families gathered for the annual B.E.S.T. Holiday Party and Senior Celebration. Guests enjoyed catching up with one another while decorating festive cookies. Several Trustees and School Heads also joined us to celebrate the holiday season, including Karlo Young, President; Floyd Smith, Sue Sadler, Head of Bryn Mawr School; and our gracious host, Matthew Micciche, Head of Friends School of Baltimore.

This gathering was also a wonderful opportunity to honor our seniors who will embark on their final semester of high school in January. This year, we welcomed two senior speakers, Aniya M. who attends the Bryn Mawr School and Maxwell C. who attends Gilman School, to reflect on their B.E.S.T. experience.

Aniya’s thoughtful reflection focused on two important areas: Networks and Access. She has taken full advantage of all B.E.S.T. programming, highlighting the Dale Carnegie Young Adult Leadership Program, the Legg Mason Women’s Leadership Network Mentor Day and most recently, an opportunity to connect with UMBC President, Dr. Freeman Hrabowski during our 30th Anniversary Breakfast Celebration where she introduced herself, shared her interests and has since applied to the prestigious Meyerhoff Scholars Program with his encouragement and support.

Equally poignant was Max’s reflection on finding his niche at Gilman and how the academic rigor and challenges in the classroom have set him up for success in college and beyond. In reflecting on a low grade he received on his first assignment at Gilman when he was in 6th grade, he stated, “…the world will not accept mediocrity…if you aren’t dedicated to your craft and don’t put your absolute best forward every time, the world will come down hard on you.” This important message resonated with everyone in the room and is something we know Max will carry with him when he begins his college career at the University of Maryland, College Park next year.

We can’t wait to see what awaits Aniya, Max, and the entire B.E.S.T. Class of 2018 as they take the next step on their path to success! From all of us at B.E.S.T., we wish you a joyful holiday season and a Happy New Year!
