Maryland's independent schools have great diversity in their philosophies, yet, as non-public schools, they all have similarities. They are all governed by a Board of Trustees, are independent in governance and finance, and have a stated policy of nondiscrimination in admission and employment. Also, they are incorporated on a non-profit basis and are accredited or approved by the state of Maryland.
Independent schools exist to provide alternative educational opportunities. Our 20 member schools are urban and rural; elementary, middle and secondary; day and boarding; single sex and coeducational. Each school charges tuition and has a program for providing financial aid.
The schools emphasize character building, development of the whole person, and living with a code of morals and ethics. Students are expected to perform community service as a reminder that each person has an obligation to share his and her gifts and talents with others.
Independent schools are different in that independent school teachers interact with their students not only as instructors in a classroom, but as counselors, coaches, and leaders in all aspects of school life.
They are different in that curriculum is faculty determined. They are also different in that teachers are encouraged to use their individual teaching styles to assist students in ways that are appropriate for the particular student.
Independent schools are distinct from other schools in that they are primarily supported by tuitions, charitable contributions, and endowment income rather than by tax or church funds.
B.E.S.T. Scholars serve as role models, returning to their neighborhoods and sharing the values they have learned at their schools with their peers.
