“Let’s Start Talking About College”

A College Readiness Workshop for 8th Graders and their Parents

an event of the .edu project of BEST

On Saturday, November 9th, B.E.S.T. hosted a college readiness workshop at Towson University designed to help 8th graders, their parents and their schools begin having conversations about college.  Towson University Admissions Director, Dave Fedorchak, and Assistant Admissions Director, Alyssa Perez, led a two hour workshop for over fifty students, parents and faculty representing independent schools and Baltimore City Public and Charter Schools. Eighth grade students had the opportunity to work in small groups and ask questions of a Towson University student panel as part of the morning’s activities. After the workshop, students participated in a campus tour.  For many students, this was their first visit to a college campus.  Students shared in their
post-event surveys that they had a better understanding of the college admissions process, the importance of taking challenging classes when they enter high school and the important role that graduating from college plays in creating more opportunities.
