Summer Scholars 2020 Successfully Champion Lillie Carroll Jackson
September 3, 2020
This year’s Summer Scholars took on the hard work of historians to research and bring attention to a very important historical figure, Lillie Carroll Jackson. Born and raised in Baltimore, Lillie Carroll Jackson, also known as the Mother of the Civil Rights Movement, worked tirelessly toward ending the practice of lynching and other racial injustices in our country. She was also a longtime leader of Baltimore’s chapter of the NAACP. Scholars used their research to send petitions to Black Past, stating reasons why they should include Lillie Carroll Jackson in their online collection. Thanks to our Scholars, Lillie Carroll Jackson now has her place in the collection at Black Past. We are so proud of our 2020 Summer Scholars and faculty members for making this possible and for bringing well-deserved attention to a Baltimorean who stood for justice and civil rights.
